Violin/Viola:

-Shoulder rest (there are a variety of shoulder rests that can be purchased at the music store.  For young violinists I recommend a cosmetic sponge or small sea sponge because they tend to work better with smaller instruments)
-Rosin
-Soft cotton cloth (to wipe excess rosin off the instrument)
-Spare set of strings
 
Cello:
-Rosin
-Soft cotton cloth (to wipe excess rosin off the instrument)

-Rock stop (needed to hold the end pin in place on smooth surfaces)
